Borley is certainly amongst the most publicized haunted places in England. Every type of haunting imaginable has been reported there by thousands of witnesses throughout the last century.

A nun-like apparition has been seen many times which is believed to be the ghost of Marie Lairre, a woman murdered by a member of the Waldgrave family who lived at Borley for centuries. She was often seen near to the Rectory accompanied by a coach drawn by headless horses. A well-known psychic investigator, Harry Price, was brought in to record the disturbances, which resulted in the Rectory becoming even more famous.

In 1937, Price leased the newly abandoned rectory for a year and began to examine the continuing phenomena. A team of 40 investigators recorded such occurrences as violently moving objects, severe temperature changes and strange noises and smells.

Exactly eleven months after a spirit predicted the burning of Borley Rectory during a séance, a lamp appeared to 'knock itself over', and the building burst into flame.
