The
Tower of London is said to have a great many ghosts of historical
significance, amongst them Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Henry VI, Thomas a
Becket and Sir Walter Raleigh.
Anne
Boleyn has been seen as a headless figure (reflecting the horrific execution
sentenced upon her by her husband, Henry VIII), her spirit surrounded by an
eerie light. She is often to be found in the White or the Bloody Tower.
Sir
Walter Raleigh's ghost is said to haunt the Queen's house, nearby to the cell
that he was locked away in.
Lady
Jane Grey was executed at the age of sixteen at the Tower after watching her
husband's decapitated body being carried away from the block. She haunts the
Tower on the anniversary of this terrible event.
One
of the most gruesome ghost stories of all time is linked with the Tower of
London, and describes the sad fate of the Countess of Salisbury. Her execution
ceremony has been re-enacted by spirits on Tower Green, and has greatly
disturbed everyone who has witnessed it. The Countess was sentenced to death
in 1541 following her alleged involvement in criminal activities (although it
is now widely believed that she was probably innocent). After being sent
struggling to the scaffold, she ran from the block and was pursued until she
was hacked to death by the axe man.
Other
events reported at the Tower include the sounds of a phantom patrol marching
past, terrible screams and cries coming from the torture chambers and bizarre
smoke-like apparitions floating in the air around the battlements.
